I celebrated my thirty-something birthday in June (I stopped counting after thirty). It took me until my mid-thirties to realize that I need to take better care of my body and my mind. Why does it take that long for some people?
Maybe it’s because we’re in the fast lane on the road of life. Or maybe it’s because we’re always thinking of others and don’t take time to think about ourselves (I hope it’s this). I know my purpose in life is to help others, but right now I also need to make sure I’m taking care of myself.
Back to my birthday for a moment. Cake is always included whether or not I’m celebrating my birthday with others, but this time I wanted to do something different.
I’ve been focusing on the way my body feels a lot lately and I was worried that I’d make a cake and end up eating the whole thing myself. That would make me feel terrible. I love cake, but honestly, I don’t always know when to stop eating it 😛
Instead of cake this year, I made mug cookies. I had two on my birthday (insert big childish grin here). I enjoyed a Gluten-Free Double Chocolate Mug Cookie, and this Gluten-Free Mug Sugar Cookie. Both were easy. Both were scrumptious. And both left me with little to no mess. Birthday win!
For the past three months leading up to my birthday I’ve been working on being a better me. I started spending more time with family, which makes me feel good and helps fill my bucket of happiness.
I started making sure I get into the gym regularly and have been increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables I eat.
Regardless of the plans for the day, I go to bed at the same time, wake up with the sun, and get dressed (even on off days).
I can’t say that I do my hair everyday, but hey, my hair is a beast to tame. It’s naturally curly and always misbehaves. I flat iron it daily, but one drop of rain and POOF, it’s a mess.
I don’t know why, but I’ve always been in a hurry to do everything. I’ve wanted to get married and have a family since I was like five, I started working when I was twelve years old, and I have a to-do list that’s longer than the Great Wall of China! It’s time for me to slow down and take one day at a time.
I’m going to focus on one goal at a time, solving one problem at a time, and eventually I will accomplish everything that I set out to do in my lifetime.
I’ve already been several amazing things (and had so many adventures) in my career and I still have a few more things that I want to “be” when I grow up. I truly feel that I can do anything if I try my best and work hard.
Guess what? You can too!
Just set aside a little time here and there and eventually you WILL reach your goal. But don’t be in a hurry, or the next thing you know, another birthday will have flown by and it will be a blur.
Enjoy your family. Enjoy your friends.
We all have challenges, we all make mistakes, but we also all have something positive or amazing that we can focus on. Whether it’s a goal, or a new adventure. Enjoy being YOU. What ever it takes.
You might be wondering how cookies led to my mini motivational speech here. I just want you to know YOU ARE WORTH IT. You deserve to be happy and you deserve a cookie.
