If you are living a gluten free lifestyle and you want to travel, we highly recommend visiting Maui. With blue waters, sandy beaches, and luscious tropical forests you’re going to love everything about Maui including the gluten free restaurants on Maui.
Gluten Free on Maui
A gluten free vacation to Maui can be super dreamy with the right planning. Our family of four has been to Maui several time and we usually find a new gluten free restaurant on Maui each time we visit.
You most certainly can stay in a hotel on Maui but we recommend staying in a condo resort or a house so you can do some of your own cooking. We usually make breakfast ourselves and save the gluten free restaurants on Maui for lunch or dinner. Dinging out is always part of the travel experience and who doesn’t want to try new yummy gluten free foods on Maui?
If you are Celiac you can either clean the kitchen, bring some of your own pans and utensils, purchase pans or utensils, or use foil baking pans. Do what works best for you.
There are only a couple of dedicated gluten free places on Maui. The rest of the gluten free options on Maui are offered at non-dedicated places but we found them to use good handling practices. Remember, no matter where you eat you need to ALWAYS ask to speak to a chef about your personal dietary needs.
Gluten Free Food on Maui
You can find several brands of gluten free food on Maui in the grocery stores and at Costco. Maui has a couple of Costco stores, one of which is near the main Maui Airport (OGG). Food on Maui is expensive compared to most other states, so be prepared for a sticker shock.
We like to pack our own gluten free crackers, breads, and mixes to take with us. We have never had an issue finding gluten free groceries on Maui – we like to pack our own to save money and to be sure we can enjoy our favorite gluten free foods on Maui.
Gluten Free Maui Restaurants
Here are some of the gluten free restaurants on Maui (not in any particular order) and some restaurants on Maui that offer gluten free options.
Maui Brick Oven Pizza (in Kihei)- We LOVED Maui brick Oven. They have so many options and they are DEDICATED Gluten Free. We tried the pizza, mozzarella sticks, bread sticks and desserts and we were super impressed. Go here!
Maui Sugar Shop – Sadly this place closed their storefront. Rumor has it that they do delivery but we weren’t able to get a hold of them when we visited. They were our favorite. The reason I’m telling you about them is because their website is still up and people are looking for the store front. They were (are?) the only dedicated gluten free bakery on Maui.
Café de Amis (in Paia) -They have amazing gluten free crepes! Just a note that their food is all prepared in the same kitchen so there is a risk of contaminants. Remember to talk to the chef so they can change gloves, wipe down work stations, etc.
Coconut’s Fish Cafe (in Kihei) – If you’re looking for fish tacos Coconut’s Fish Cafe comes highly recommended. While they aren’t dedicated gluten free they do have a separate work area for preparing gluten free foods safely.
Dukes Beach House (in Lahaina) – Dukes has always been a favorite of ours, even before going gluten free. They are not dedicated gluten free but the staff and chef does an incredible job ensuring you enjoy a safe meal. The fish options are to-die-for and the appetizers and desserts are not to be missed.
Fabiani’s (in Kihei and Wailea) – Fabinani’s makes traditional Italian dishes and you can get almost any dish gluten free! They cook the gluten free pasta separate from the other pastas and they work to ensure your meal is safe to eat. Remember to always talk to the chef.
Maui Bread Company (in Kehei) – We stopped into Maui Bread Company for some gluten free baked goods and we were not disappointed. While the majority of their goods contain gluten, they have several individually wrapped gluten free treats and breads that are baked in a dedicated space. We enjoyed their gluten free chocolate chip cookies and gluten free rolls.
Choice Health Bar (in Lahaina) – If you’re looking for a healthy snack, a smoothie, or a smoothie parfait this is your place. We frequently stopped into Choice Health Bar for smoothies and granola. Choice Health Bar also serves salads and bowls and is entirely vegetarian.
Leilani’s on the Beach (Lahaina) – I’m sure you noticed that we dine a lot in Lahaina – we usually stay in Lahaina because of all the gluten free options. Leilani’s is fabulous. They offer fresh seafood and amazing appetizers, most of which can be prepared gluten free. And it’s on the beach, so win!
Cool Cat Cafe (in Lahaina) – The Cool Cat Cafe sits on the second story overlooking a beach in Lahaina. It’s open air and they often have live musing. While it’s not dedicated gluten free they do a great job with food allergies. We enjoyed gluten free burgers and salads.
