Last summer we had an abundance of plums that all became ripe at the same time. I had over two hundred plums sitting on my counter at one point. Way too many to eat, and too many for my neighbors to eat.
My husband and I decided to get creative with the plums. We didn’t want any of them to go to waste. It was our first year getting so many plums off the tree and we didn’t quite know where to start.
What can you make with plums besides jelly? At first, the thought of making jelly terrified me. That would be a lot of jelly! Second, I have historically been terrible at making jelly.
I can bake up a storm and cook up some pretty amazing dishes – but jelly?
I fail every time. It never sets up no matter what I do. I suck at jelly making.
I was once asked in an interview what I think my biggest weakness is. I told them jelly making. I’m not even joking.
They appreciated my honestly. What can I say? It was true.
I even tried to improve my jelly making skills by visiting the one person I know who makes the best jelly every time, my husbands grandmother. After a days worth of lessons she let me know that it was hopeless and I would never be able to craft my jelly making skills.
So what did we make with the plums? Yes, I still made jelly, but it ended up being a sauce or “syrup” as my girls like to call it.
We also made some plum wine. It was my first time making wine and let me tell you it was a-flipping-mazing. Best homemade wine. Hands down.
We also ate some until we couldn’t eat anymore. And when we got to that point, we decided to start mixing cocktails with plum puree’.
That’s right – plum cocktails! Delish!
We experimented with a few other ingredients and came up with this refreshing Key Lime Plum Mojito.
