    Are Cheez-Its Gluten Free?

Yes, one Cheez-It variety is gluten-free. In January 2026, Cheez-It launched its first-ever certified gluten-free product: Cheez-It Original Gluten Free. The new cracker is certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization, which means it tests at 10 parts per million of gluten or less and should be safe for people with celiac disease. Every other Cheez-It variety on the shelf still contains wheat flour and is not safe.

If you grew up eating Cheez-Its and gave them up after a celiac or gluten sensitivity diagnosis, this is the first time in more than a hundred years the brand has made a version you can actually eat. It is also the only one. Read the front of the box before you reach for it. The two products live side by side in most stores, and the original red box is not gluten-free.

    Which Cheez-Its Are Gluten-Free?

Only one variety is gluten-free as of this month:

    • Cheez-It Original Gluten Free (GFCO certified, launched January 15, 2026)

Everything else in the Cheez-It lineup is made with enriched wheat flour and is not gluten-free. That includes the classics most people associate with the brand:

    • Cheez-It Original (regular red box)
    • Cheez-It White Cheddar
    • Cheez-It Extra Toasty
    • Cheez-It Extra Cheesy
    • Cheez-It Hot & Spicy
    • Cheez-It Cheddar Jack
    • Cheez-It Italian Four Cheese
    • Cheez-It Snap'd
    • Cheez-It Puff'd
    • Cheez-It Grooves
    • Cheez-It Duoz
    • Any Cheez-It Snack Mix product

The new cheez-it gluten-free box is clearly marked on the front. Look for the words "Gluten Free" printed in large type and the GFCO seal. If the box doesn't say "gluten free" on the front, assume it contains wheat.

    What's in Gluten Free Cheez-Its?

The new gluten-free recipe replaces wheat flour with a blend made from rice, sorghum, and degerminated yellow corn. The full ingredient list reads:

Gluten-free flour blend (rice, sorghum, degerminated yellow corn), vegetable oil (soybean, palm, canola and/or sunflower with TBHQ for freshness), cornstarch, modified corn starch, cheddar cheese (milk, salt, cheese cultures, enzymes). Contains 2% or less of soy lecithin, salt, xanthan gum, monoglycerides, citric acid, yeast extract, lactic acid, paprika color, baking soda, dextrose, paprika extract color.

Allergen note: These snacks contain milk and soy. They may also contain almonds. Read the box yourself before serving these to anyone with additional dietary restrictions.

    What Does GFCO Certified Mean?

The Gluten-Free Certification Organization, or GFCO, is the stricter of the two main gluten-free certifications in the United States. To carry the GFCO seal, a product must test at 10 parts per million of gluten or less. The FDA's "gluten-free" label rule allows up to 20 parts per million. GFCO sets the bar twice as tight.

For most people with celiac disease, that distinction matters. The GFCO seal on the Cheez-It Original Gluten Free box is the reason this product is safe for celiacs. It is also what separates it from products that simply do not list gluten ingredients without any third-party verification.

Why Did It Take So Long?

Cheez-It was introduced in 1921 by the Green & Green Company. For more than a hundred years, the recipe was built on enriched wheat flour. Kellanova, which owns the brand, said it spent years working on a recipe and a manufacturing process that could deliver the same texture and flavor without gluten and without cross-contamination risk.

Brands that share equipment between gluten-containing and gluten-free products usually cannot get GFCO certification. The fact that this product earned that certification suggests Cheez-It built a dedicated process for it. That is the kind of detail that matters when you are deciding whether to trust a new product with your safety.

    Homemade Cheez-Its Style Crackers

Gluten Free Cheez-It are now on shelves nationwide, but stock can be inconsistent in the first year of any new product launch. If your store doesn't carry it yet, or you just prefer making things from scratch like I do, a homemade version is faster than you might think.

A bowl of gluten-free cheez it crackers next to a photo showing someone holding one of the crackers.

These homemade cheez it crackers are the closest version we've made. The recipe uses real cheeze, sharp cheddar, along with gluten-free flour, butter, salt, and water. That's the whole list. The dough comes together in a food processor in under a minute, and the crackers bake in about fifteen.

Homemade crackers give you control over the thickness and the seasoning. Want them thinner and crispier? Roll the dough thinner. Want more bite? Use an extra-sharp cheddar and add a pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika. Want a saltier finish? A flake of finishing salt on top before baking does the work.

These are also great with a slice of cheese between two of them to make little cheese cracker sandwiches or with dip or snack spreads. We've used them for parties, family movie nights, and treats in kids lunches.

    More Gluten-Free Cracker Recipes

If cheese crackers are not what you are after, we have a few other gluten-free cracker recipes worth trying:

    • Gluten-free crackers: a versatile plain cracker base you can season however you like. Good with cheese, hummus, or just butter.
    • Gluten-free Ritz crackers: buttery, flaky, and built to hold up under a slice of cheddar or a smear of peanut butter.

Between these three recipes, you can cover most of the snack-cracker territory the gluten-free aisle is still missing. (And you control the salt, which is half the reason to bake your own.)

A black bowl filled with square, golden-brown gluten-free crackers topped with sesame seeds, placed on a wooden board with a yellow checkered cloth and a small wooden bowl of sesame seeds in the background.

Where to Buy Gluten Free Cheez-Its

Cheez-It Original Gluten Free is available at major grocery retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, and a bunch of regional chains. I've also seen it stocked at Whole Foods and many natural grocery stores. Online options include Amazon (though it was sold out there when we last checked), Instacart, and the Cheez-It website.

The product launched in January 2026, so distribution is still expanding in some regions. If your store does not have it yet, ask the manager to stock it. Demand was strong enough at launch that some stores sold out in the first few weeks.

    Cross-Contamination and Other Safety Notes

GFCO certification covers cross-contamination in the manufacturing process, but it does not cover what happens after the box is open. A few common-sense reminders for celiac households:

    • Use a clean bowl, not one that just held wheat-based crackers.
    • Keep the gluten-free box separate from the regular Cheez-Its in your pantry. Color-coded bag clips help.
    • If someone in the house eats both versions, wash hands before reaching into the gluten-free box.
    • For school lunches, send the gluten-free crackers in a labeled bag or a separate container.

These steps sound obvious, but the most common celiac exposures happen at home, not at restaurants. The shared kitchen is where it gets you.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Are all Cheez-Its gluten-free now?

No. Only Cheez-It Original Gluten Free, the new product launched in January 2026, is gluten-free. Every other variety, including the original red-box Cheez-It, contains enriched wheat flour and is not safe for people with celiac disease.

Is Cheez-It Original Gluten Free safe for celiacs?

Yes. It carries the GFCO certification, which requires testing at 10 parts per million of gluten or less. That is stricter than the FDA's gluten-free standard of 20 parts per million.

What is in the new gluten-free Cheez-It?

The recipe uses a gluten-free flour blend of rice, sorghum, and degerminated yellow corn instead of wheat. The cheese, oil, and seasoning ingredients are similar to the original. Full ingredient list is above.

Does Cheez-It Original Gluten Free taste like the original?

Early reviews from people who tasted both side by side say the gluten-free version is close, with a slightly crunchier and airier texture than the original. The cheese flavor is the same. Most reviewers say it satisfies the craving.

    Where can I buy gluten-free Cheez-Its?

Major grocery chains nationwide, including Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, Whole Foods, and most regional grocers. Also available on Amazon and through Instacart. Distribution is still expanding as of mid-2026.

    Are Cheez-It Snap'd, Puff'd, or Grooves gluten-free?

No. These varieties all contain wheat flour. Only the product labeled "Cheez-It Original Gluten Free" is safe.

Can I make my own gluten-free Cheez-Its at home?

Yes. Our 5-ingredient gluten-free cheese crackers are the closest homemade version. Five ingredients, fifteen minutes of bake time, and you control the thickness and seasoning.
