Gluten Free Desserts
You might be wondering why there's a bottle of red wine in the back of this photo with the Gluten-Free Chocolate Dessert Shots. Well, I'll be honest - this dessert is damn good... but it's even better washed down with some fine red wine.
While I was photographing these tasty little desserts I was also sipping on a glass of Merlot that a friend gifted to me.
My rhythm went something like this: set up photo, dip spoon into a chocolate dessert shot next to me, hmmm and yummm while enjoying the bite, wash it down with Merlot, take photo, Repeat.
You know those little chocolate mousse shots you can get a fine restaurants? Yeah, these are like those, except better and you can make them at home.
This recipe makes three dessert shots but you could easily double or triple the recipe to serve more. Each dessert shot is about 4 oz. and is packed (seriously packed) with grain-free chocolate cookie crumbs, chocolate whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and topped with mini chocolate chips.
It's all gluten-free and super scrumptious. The layers of cookie, mousse-like chocolate, chocolate sauce, and chocolate chips are the perfect match for anyone who like a little chocolate for dessert.
This recipe may be simple, but it's still quite elegant.
I know what you are probably thinking, "These look very sophisticated. Where will I find the time?" I know these look like they'd steal the show at a fine dining restaurant on the top floor of a skyscraper in New York (and they would), but don't worry, they're quite simple to make.
Usually when we have a dinner party, or we are hosting family, I'll make dessert shots because they are already single-serving sized, and I can throw the little shot glasses in the dishwasher. They are perfect for a quick dessert, or for serving at parties.
Can I make these dessert shots dairy-free?
Yes, simply use coconut cream or coconut whipped cream, a dairy-free chocolate sauce, and dairy-free chocolate chips.
What can I use instead of almond flour?
You can use hazelnut flour, or if you can't do nuts you can use your favorite cookie crushed instead of making the cookie crumb filling.

For the chocolate whipped cream:
- 8 oz. whipping cream (or coconut cream to make it dairy-free, or cool whip)
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
For the chocolate cookie crumbs:
- 1 cup almond flour (or almond meal)
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
For the rest:
- Chocolate Sauce (optional if dairy-free)
- Mini gluten-free, dairy-free chocolate chips
- For the chocolate whipped cream - place whipping cream, cocoa, and powdered sugar in a mixer and mix on medium to high speed until firm peaks form.
- For the chocolate cookie crumbs - in a small mixing bowl, mix all ingredients until evenly incorporated.
- Assembly: Place a small spoonful of cookie crumbs (no more than 1 tablespoon) in the bottom on a 4 oz. glass or shot glass. Top with a heaping spoonful of chocolate whipped cream. Drizzle the chocolate sauce over whipped cream. Sprinkle on chocolate chips.
- Repeat one more time.
- Serve chilled.
- Store in the refrigerator covered for up to 3 days.
