Gluten Free Mashed Potatoes Recipe
I know what you might be thinking, aren't potatoes gluten free? Yes, potatoes are gluten free.
So why the gluten free mashed potatoes recipe? Truth be told, not everyone knows that potatoes are gluten free and that mashed potatoes are gluten free as long as you don't add any gluten ingredients.
And that's okay.
Every year more and more people find out they can't eat gluten and they need to make sure the foods they are eating are gluten free.
Are Mashed Potatoes Gluten Free?
Homemade mashed potatoes that don't use any ingredients that contain gluten are gluten free. Store bought mashed potatoes, whether prepared or "instant" mashed potatoes are not always gluten free.
Please check labels before purchasing any store bought mashed potatoes.
Best Potatoes for Making Gluten Free Mashed Potatoes
We like to use Russets, Red Potatoes, and Yukon Golds to make gluten free mashed potatoes. If you use red potatoes or Yukon golds, you don't' need to peel them.
Ingredients in Gluten Free Mashed Potatoes
Potatoes - You can use your favorite potatoes, we like to use russet potatoes or red potatoes.
Water - For boiling the potatoes
Butter - For flavor and to help with the smooth texture. You can use salted or unsalted butter. Use dairy-free butter to keep these mashed potatoes dairy-free.
Salt and Pepper - For flavor.

How to make Gluten Free Mashed Potatoes
- Peel and cube the potatoes.
- Place potatoes into a large cooking pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and then boil until fork tender, about 15 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return to the pan. Add in the butter, salt, and pepper.
- Mash with a potato masher until no lumps remain.

How to make mashed potatoes in a crock pot
Wash and peel the potatoes then place the potatoes and 1 cup of broth (chicken or veggies) OR water in your crock pot. Cook on high for 3 ½-4 hours or until the potatoes are very soft.
Mash the potatoes with a potato masher until smooth. Add butter, salt and pepper and continue to mash until no lumps remain.
How to make mashed mashed potatoes in an Instant Pot
Peel potatoes and cut into quarters.
Add 1 cup of water to a 6-qt Instant Pot®. Place the metal trivet into the pot. Place the quartered potatoes on top of the trivet.
Select the manual setting; adjust the pressure to high, and set time for 10 minutes.
When finished cooking, quick-release pressure according to manufacturer’s directions.
Remove the potatoes and the trivet and drain the water before returning the potatoes to the pot.
Add in the butter, salt and pepper and using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until smooth and no lumps remain.
How to reheat mashed potatoes
To reheat mashed potatoes, spoon your leftover mashed potatoes into the nonstick pan and cook 8 to 10 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
You can also reheat mashed potatoes on low heat covered in the microwave.

- 4 tablespoons butter (or more if you like)
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Peel and cube the potatoes.
- Place potatoes into a large cooking pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and then boil until fork tender, about 15 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return to the pan. Add in the butter, salt, and pepper.
- Mash with a potato masher until no lumps remain.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- You can cut this recipe in half or double it, if needed.
