How To Make Gluten-Free French Fried Onions?
To make gluten-free French fried onions soak thinly sliced onions in buttermilk for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, mix gluten-free flour with paprika, garlic powder, and salt to create a flavorful coating. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry the coated onions until they turn golden and crispy, usually taking around 2-3 minutes. Drain the fried onions on paper towels to remove excess oil, allowing them to crisp up further. Finally, use these gluten-free French fried onions on top of this GF green bean casserole.
ARE FRENCH FRIED ONIONS GLUTEN-FREE?
Traditionally not, you can, however, make or buy gluten-free onions.
WHAT CAN I SUBSTITUTE FOR FRENCH FRIED ONIONS IN GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE?
You can also use pork rind. Other options are gluten-free breadcrumbs combined with butter, crushed gluten-free potato chips, or gluten-free crackers.
CAN I MAKE THIS GLUTEN-FREE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE WITHOUT CREAM OF MUSHROOM SOUP?
Yes, you can. Gluten-Free Cream of Chicken Soup is also a homemade swap that is delicious here. Alternatively, sauté onions and garlic for a flavorful base, thickening with a gluten-free flour or cornstarch slurry. Add gluten-free herbs and a dairy-free alternative for creaminess. Adjust seasonings to taste, creating a satisfying alternative for those avoiding mushroom-based ingredients.
HOW DO YOU KEEP GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE FROM GETTING MUSHY?
Make sure the gluten-free mushroom soup that's added is at the desired consistency. If it is too runny, the casserole will come out mushy.
What Substitutions / Replacements Can I Make in This GF Green Bean Casserole?
Dairy-Free - If you can't have dairy, you can use unflavored dairy-free milk, dairy-free cream of mushroom soup, and omit the cheese to make this gluten-free green bean casserole recipe dairy-free.
Vegan - Use homemade or store-bought vegan cream of mushroom soup and a non-dairy milk alternative. Replace Worcestershire sauce with a vegan version and omit the cheddar cheese, or use a vegan cheese substitute. Omit the crushed pork rinds as toppings.
Onion-Free - The onion is optional and can be omitted.
How To Prepare This Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole In Advance
Prepare the gluten-free green bean casserole ahead of time by trimming and blanching the green beans and storing them along with the prepared cream of mushroom soup separately in the refrigerator.
When you're ready to assemble the dish, combine the green beans and soup in a casserole dish, omitting the topping, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours. Just before baking, add the gluten-free fried onions or preferred topping, adjusting the baking time as needed since the casserole will be cold.
This allows for a convenient make-ahead option, streamlining the cooking process and ensuring a timely and hassle-free preparation on the day of the meal.
CAN I PREP THE GREEN BEANS THE NIGHT BEFORE?
Yes, you can. Just trim, wash, and blanch them if using fresh green beans, and then store the green beans in the fridge for when you are ready to make the dish.
HOW DO YOU STORE A GLUTEN-FREE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE?
You can store it in the fridge for 2-3 days, either wrapped in foil in the casserole dish or in an airtight container. The top may not be as crispy due to the moisture.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FRESH GREEN BEANS VS. CANNED VS. FROZEN FOR GLUTEN-FREE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE
Fresh green beans are the best in terms of texture. Frozen and canned beans are slightly limper but can work on those busy weeknights.
How Can I Maximize Nutrition in Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole?
Incorporating nutrient-rich ingredients and making thoughtful swaps can enhance the nutritional value of this classic dish. To maximize the nutritional benefits, opt for fresh green beans, as they tend to retain more vitamins and minerals compared to their canned or frozen counterparts. The health benefits of green beans are astounding.
Additionally, consider using homemade gluten-free cream of mushroom soup, as it allows for better control over the ingredients, reducing unnecessary additives and preservatives.
What To Do If Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole Is Watery?
If your gluten-free green bean casserole ends up watery, there are a few quick fixes you can try. Firstly, you can thicken the sauce by simmering it for a little longer or adding a mixture of gluten-free cornstarch or arrowroot powder with cold water.
Secondly, ensure you're not adding excess liquid initially. Adjust the baking time and temperature if needed, giving it a little more time in the oven to let the moisture evaporate.
Lastly, let the casserole rest for a few minutes after baking, allowing the ingredients to settle and the excess moisture to be absorbed, resulting in a firmer texture.
What Shortcuts Can I Use For This Recipe?
To simplify the process of making a gluten-free green bean casserole, consider using store-bought gluten-free cream of mushroom soup and pre-cut green beans.
Opt for pre-made gluten-free fried onions instead of making them from scratch. Plan ahead by prepping some components, such as blanching the green beans, the day before.
Additionally, use an oven-safe skillet for the entire cooking process to minimize cleanup and streamline the preparation of this classic dish. These time-saving shortcuts can make preparing a gluten-free green bean casserole more convenient without affecting the flavor.
What Can I Serve GF Green Bean Casserole With?
Gluten-free green bean casserole pairs well with various main dishes and side items, especially for Gluten-Free Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Hi! I'm a new reader, but I thought you would like to know about an editing error on this page. Underneath your wonderful step-by-step pictures for your GF Green Bean Casserole, you have "How to Make Gluten Free CREAM OF MUSHROOM SOUP" as the section head before you begin listing the steps for how to make the casserole.
This recipe looks delicious and I can't wait to try it. 🙂
chrystal
Thanks for the catch, Kristi! I just fixed it.

What do we do if we are using frozen green beans? It says in the recipe to see notes if using frozen, but there’s no note
chrystal
Sorry about that Kaylee. You can either blanch them for 5 minutes like you would frozen green beans, or run them under hot water to defrost them. The properties of vegetables change when frozen and they are softer when defrosted, then if they were fresh. In this case you don't need to blanch them first.
Best,
Chrystal

I love this healthy, yet delicious, recipe! I made it for my family last night and everyone loved it! I'm hoping to make some for my sister and her family but she is dairy free. Would using almond milk instead of normal milk work instead?
chrystal
Yes, you can use an unflavored almond milk.
Best,
Chrystal

I just made the GF Green Bean Casserole for our Thanksgiving dinner and it is a WOW! I used fresh organic green beans and topped it with the pork rinds and it was the best I've ever had. Nevermind that it had the added benefit of being GF. Kudos to the chef!
chrystal
I am so glad you loved it. Thank you for letting me know.

My gf onions burnt with almost 10 minutes still left to go! I recommend you update to advise putting the topping on later in the baking process. Burnt onions are gross.
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Melinda!
Thanks for sharing your experience, and I'm sorry to hear about the burnt onions. Oven temperatures can vary, and hot spots are common. Considering your case, adding the topping later in the baking process is a great suggestion. Also, ensuring your oven is serviced annually can help maintain consistent performance. Everyone's oven behaves differently, so adjustments may be needed based on individual appliances. I appreciate your input and hope your next attempt turns out perfectly!

I love your recipe as written. I'm thinking of getting creative and trying it with broccoli instead of green beans for a new side.
Donna S. Woolf
How many servings does this recipe make?
Donna S. Woolf
Sorry just saw the answer. Makes 8.
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Donna,
8 servings.
Janet
I’d love to know how to make this recipe, using frozen green beans. Thank you for such wonderful and much needed recipes!
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Janet,
I have not tried it, but I would suggest you cook them until tender.
Jackie
Can this recipe be done 1 or two days ahead of time and then warmed in the oven? If so, what temperature and for how long?
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Jackie,
Here's the excerpt from the recipe "You can, however I would suggest you cook it without the topping and add the topping when you are going to eat it. Put it under the grill until you have a nice crispy top layer."
Jess
Looking forward to making this for Easter! Can the recipe be doubled easily? I have a deep casserole dish
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Jess,
Yes, the recipe can be doubled easily with a deep casserole dish. Make sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly. The casserole may take a bit longer to cook through if it's deeper, so check it periodically to ensure that it's heated through and the top is golden brown and crispy. Enjoy!

How long to cook
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Janet,
Take a look at the recipe card at the bottom. Cook it for 40-45 minutes.
