Learn to make oat flour with a couple of simple steps!
Oat flour is a nutritious whole grain flour that is easy to make. It’s a little sweet, a little crumbly, and a little nutty and it's perfect for baking and cooking with.
Oat Flour
Oats are inexpensive, easy to store and they taste amazing. They are a whole grain, so they have some fiber as well.
Oat flour has all the same qualities as oats, but you can bake with it.
Recently it’s been hard to find gluten free flour blends, so we started developing recipes using oat flour.
What kind of oats can be turned into oat flour?
We like to use old-fashioned oats and quick cooking oats when we make oat flour. You can use steel cut oats, but it takes a bit longer to process them.
How to Make Oat Flour
Oat flour is one of the easiest flours to make. Add oats into your blender or food processor (affiliate links) and blend the oats until they turn into a fine flour.
Not all recipes work with oat flour and oat flour isn’t a 1-to-1 substitution in every recipe. I recommend using oat flour in recipes that call for oat flour.
Tips for using oat flour:
It’s best to measure out oat flour by weight not volume.
Oat flour works best in recipes that also call for eggs – it helps bind the oat flour to the other ingredients.
Oat flour works best in lower fat recipes like cakes, quick breads, and muffins.
It's best to let batters using oat flour sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the wet ingredients to incorporate with the oat flour.
Oats do go rancid, so always check expiration dates and store your oat flour in a glass jar or sealed container.
Is oat flour gluten free?
Oats are naturally gluten free. They can be contaminated during the growing process, transportation, processing, and packaging. You can purchase certified gluten free oats – which means they’ve been tested for gluten.
If you’re celiac, it’s best to purchase purity protocol oats. This means they took extra careful steps to prevent contamination from the growing process to packaging.
Some people are sensitive to oats. Please always check labels and speak with a health care official if you think you may be sensitive.

Our favorite oats:
GF Harvest Purity Protocol Oats
Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Oats
Always check labels for disclaimers on processing and packaging. You can always purchase oat flour from the store. We like Bob's Red Mill Oat Flour.
If you aren’t non-celiac gluten intolerant or celiac, consider buying oats in bulk. It’s less expensive and you can buy as little or as much as you like.

Oats and buckwheat are cheap and both are gluten free. I'd love to hear how using this oat flour or buckwheat flour in recipes turn out.
I have a buckwheat pancake recipe with no other flours that works out pretty well, but I haven't experimented with other recipes using it or oats - yet.

Please give us a recipe using oat flour. I would like to make a bread that does not crumble so easily. Most GF breads I have tried crumble so much it makes it hard to use as sandwich bread. I haven't tried your #2 flour blend yet, but I will try it. Please give us a bread that contains oat flour also.
Thank you.
Lindsay
