Gluten-Free Donuts
I've mentioned this in previous posts - my girls and I enjoy a donut every Friday. It helps us wind down for the week and rewards us for getting up and getting ready for the day on time. These gluten-free vanilla cake donuts are one of our favorite gluten-free donuts.
Gluten-free donuts are an extra special treat that we save for Friday mornings. We like to make up a big batch of gluten-free donuts and freeze them for the future weeks. When we run out of gluten-free donuts, we bake up another batch.
These Gluten-Free Vanilla Birthday Cake donuts are incredible any time and aren't just for celebrating birthdays. You can decorate them with frosting or enjoy them plain.
Gluten-Free Vanilla Donuts are super easy to make if you have a good recipe, so I hope you'll try these and see just how simple they are to make.
When you do, please stop back by and let me know what you thought and what you topped your gluten-free donuts with.
Gluten-Free Cake Donuts
We rotate the types of gluten-free donuts we make, adding in variety and giving me a chance to test out new gf donut recipes. My girls like to dip these gluten-free vanilla cake donuts in glaze and add sprinkles.
I love it when they bake with me, and they love being rewarded with a sweat treat for helping. The girls and I devoured these Gluten-Free Vanilla Birthday Cake Donuts straight from the oven.
The second batch made it to the glaze and sprinkle process and were frozen for the next week. The texture in these gluten-free vanilla donuts is perfect. There is a little give when you pick the donut up. It's tender, and melts perfectly in your mouth.
Do I have to use a donut pan?
If you don't have a donut pan, I recommend you get one. But for now, you can use a muffin pan or a mini muffin pan. Just note that the cooking time is lower with a donut pan because the donut dough gets contact all around, including in the center with the donut pan.

Can I make these gluten-free donuts dairy-free?
Absolutely. Substitute the milk for your favorite dairy-free milk. Also use dairy-free milk in the glaze.
These gluten-free vanilla cake donuts are insanely simple to make. They bake up in less than ten minutes and are tender, flavorful, and hit your donut-loving taste buds in all the right places.
You can have fun with the glaze by adding in color, or you can use different types of sprinkles. One year for Halloween, we made the glaze purple and topped the donuts with orange sprinkles. They were fun to hand out to friends on Halloween.
Do these gluten-free vanilla cake donuts freeze well?
Yes, these gluten-free vanilla cake donuts freeze well. We often double the batch and freeze the rest for our Friday donut days. That way, I don't have to make a fresh batch each week. Simply take them out the night before, or defrost them in the microwave in the morning.
What gluten-free sprinkles do you recommend?
Judee's has a huge variety of certified gluten-free sprinkles. Look at all the gorgeous colors!
Chef's Select is another great option.
Most sprinkles don't have wheat or gluten in them, but they are usually processed in a facility that processes other glutinous ingredients. Make sure to check labels for allergen information.

My Gluten-Free Gingerbread Donuts are delicious any time of year, not just in the fall months, if you're looking for a gluten-free donut with some spice. These gluten-free cinnamon rolls are also delicious and easy to make.

Gluten-Free Vanilla Cake Donuts
Fun and festive Gluten-Free Vanilla Cake Donuts that are soft, fluffy, bursting with vanilla, and smothered in a sweet glaze. You are going to love how easy these gluten-free donuts are to make.
Ingredients
For the donuts:
- 2 cups all purpose gluten-free flour blend
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons gluten-free baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup milk (or dairy-free milk)
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons gluten-free vanilla extract
- ½ cup oil of choice
For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- ½ - 1 cup sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F. Grease two six-serving donut pans; set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate small mixing bowl, whisk the milk, eggs, vanilla, and oil.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk until combined.
- Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan filling about ½ full. The batter should not cover the center of the donut, where the hole will go.
- Bake for 7-9 minutes or until the donuts rise and set.
- Remove from oven and carefully remove the donut from the pan. You may need to use a spoon or a rubber spatula to loosen them if they stick.
- Cool donuts on a wire rack for 5 minutes.
- Place your wire rack over a cookie sheet or piece of parchment paper.
- For the glaze: In a separate small mixing bowl, combine the powered sugar and milk. Heat covered in the microwave for 30 seconds. Remove from the microwave and stir until all sugar lumps are dissolved.
- One at a time, dip the tops of your donuts into the glaze.
- Place your donut back on the rack and repeat until all donuts have been dipped.
- Repeat 1-2 more times until your glaze is white.
- After the last dip in the glaze, dip the donuts into the sprinkles.
- Store donuts in a airtight container at room temperate for up to three days.
Notes
- You can use dairy-free milk to make these gluten free donuts dairy-free.
- When working with or measuring gluten-free flour, spoon the flour into the measuring cup and level. Do not scoop your measuring cup into the gluten-free flour. The best method really is to weight it but I don't have the ingredient weights for all my recipes yet.

Do you have to use a doughnut pan?

These are the most delicious homemade donuts my kids and I have made. Thank you for sharing your recipe!!! I used Pamela's Gluten-Free all-purpose flour blend, and I substituted buttermilk with coconut milk and vinegar. I also used coconut milk in the glaze. Everything was perfect 😀

I have made a number of gluten free donut recipes lately. This one is by far the best. I made them dairy free by using almond milk and vinegar. Excellent!
chrystal
So glad you liked them! Thank you for letting me know.

Thank you so much for this recipe. My daughter was diagnosed with celiac 5 months ago, and our tradition is to always have donuts for her birthday breakfast. You saved the day. I was afraid that I would have to try a bunch of recipes before I found a keeper, but your recipe turned out wonderful.
My husband says these are better than Dunkin' Donuts, and we are not easy to please. I used the Babycakes mini donut maker, and cooked each batch for 3-4 minutes. I made a chocolate icing with melted chocolate in it. Thank you for saving our birthday tradition.

Hi Treva,

These look awesome! I've been gluten free almost my entire life and I have always said that if i found out I could suddenly eat gluten, the first thing I would grab is a doughnut! I've just never had good gf ones.
Could we sub coconut oil for the vegetable oil in the recipe?

Hi Jacs,
I am a huge fan of donuts too. I have other donut recipes - so be sure to check them out. You can sub coconut oil 🙂

All purpose flour have gum in it? If not do I need to add some? Thanks
chrystal
Hi Paula,
My flour blend doesn't use gum, and this recipe doesn't need it. You can use a flour blend with gum in it, and it won't hurt it.
Hope that helps!
Chrystal
Jamiy
Would these freeze well? I would like to make up some for my son to be able to take to school when someone brings cupcakes for a birthday. He is allergic to wheat, gluten, egg whites, and soy, so finding something pre-made or a recipe that works is hard.
chrystal
Hi Jamiy,
Yes, these freeze well.

Can you substitute just regular milk for buttermilk? I just got my donut pan and am eager to try these tomorrow without having to go to the store!
chrystal
Hi Amber,
You can use regular milk. The texture will be slightly different, but they should still be tasty.
Best,
Chrystal
Alex
Just made these and they taste great but they came out a little dry. Any suggestions on what I might have done wrong?
Thanks so much! I'm so glad I found your website!
chrystal
Hi Alex,
These shouldn't be dry, but here are a few things that might have made them dry:
- Did follow the directions and use the same flour blend?
- It's warmer out, so oven temperatures are sometimes higher then they say, and will cook the donuts quicker.
- Did you spoon the flour into the measuring cup? If you scoop and level, you'll end up with more flour then needed.
Best,
Chrystal

These keep up to 4 days at room temperature, and up to 3 months in the freezer. Hope that helps!

A question for those that substituted the 3/4 cup of buttermilk with coconut oil & vinegar. Did you use equal parts of both to make up for the 3/4 cup of buttermilk? Also, what brand of vinegar is gluten free?
chrystal
Hi Mandi,
I think you meant sub in coconut milk and vinegar (not coconut oil)? To make the dairy-free buttermilk, add the same amount of coconut milk (3/4 of a cup), but not full fat as it will be too thick, and add in 1 teaspoon of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Let them mixture sit for 5 minutes before adding it to the batter. It will help it thicken up and get lumpy, similar to buttermilk. Use dairy-free milk in the glaze.

Chrystal

I am not sure why but mine came out like biscuits, heavy, and dense. I followed the recipe exactly. Not due why they didn't work.

Hi Marline,
Sorry to hear that. They should not have been dense. What flour blend did you use? How did you measure out your flour?

I made these with my aspiring culinary son Nick, who"s autistic. He was so excited to see the results of our efforts. We made them just as the recipe said, they were wonderful, and so much fun to make. I had bought the donut forms to make my new IBS diet more fun. So worth it. We found we only needed 2 coats of sugar glaze, though we had to make a second batch. I think we were putting it on pretty thick. lol

We can't do eggs so wondering if we can sub in flax eggs or applesauce?
chrystal
Hi Mary,
You can do a flax egg in this recipe. The texture isn't the same, but it's still quite yummy. I also have a cinnamon sugar donut that I've done a flax egg in and I have a gluten-free vegan chocolate espresso donut that used flax egg. You can leave out the espresso and it will be a chocolate donut. Hope that helps!

I have been trying to figure out which GF flour works best. I decided to split the batch and do 6 with Pamelas Baking Mix and the other Rogers 1-to-1.
Verdict: The Pamelas are toasted colour but crumbled while trying to dip it into the icing and so I ended up with pieces of donut. They did, however, get harder with time so those might be better to ice completely cool. They still are fragile but very delicious!
Rogers: The donuts turned out rising and looking like a perfect donut except they stayed very light in colour. Good too but the flavour of the Pamelas was better 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!
chrystal
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for stopping by and sharing about those two flour blends. I haven't tried either of them yet 🙂 I usually use my flour blend recipe or Bob's Red Mill 1-to-1 in this recipe.

I don’t have a gluten free flour “blend” will regular gluten free flour work also?

All I mean by gluten-free flour blend is a blend of gluten-free flours. I use bob's red mill 1-to-1. What gluten-free flour do you have?

The director for my son's play asked me to provide donuts that he can eat. I told her there is no such thing. Then I took a deep breath and sent my search engine to work. Thank you for this delicious, easy recipe with suggestions for dairy free!
I substituted 1/2 cup almond flour for an equal amout of gf flour for extra moistness. Delicious!

Derval Gaughan
My 8 year old daughter is coeliac and has never had a donut so we are so very excited to make these this weekend. I bought the Wilton donut pans so we're all set. Just wondering what type of oil we should consider when you say "oil of choice"? Also I am in Ireland so we have different GF flour blends. I usually use Doves Farm - should I use a self raising {Ingredients: flour blend (rice, potato, tapioca, maize & buckwheat), raising agents (mono-calcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate), thickener (xanthan gum)} or a plain blend {Ingredients: rice, potato, tapioca, maize, buckwheat}? Thank you in advance for your reply 🙂
chrystal
Hi Derval,
For the oil, you can use canola oil, vegetable oil, avocado oil, or any mild flavored oil. I haven't used Doves Farms flour but looking at the ingredients, I'd use the plain blend and follow the rest of the recipe. If you don't have baking powder then you can use the other self rising blend. Again, I haven't used this flour but I am guessing it will work.

Chrystal

These doughnuts are delicious! I used King Arthur Measure for Measure Gluten Free Flour Blend and an egg replacer and they came out just fine. I also used melted butter in my glaze and oh boy!

P.S. I also used coconut milk just to use it up.

I made these donuts for my hubby's birthday yesterday. He has a ton of food restrictions, so he is always weary of new recipes I try and if they will work out and taste well.
I surprised him with them and he absolutely loves them! So does my son!
I used almond milk instead of cow's milk and the Bob Mill's 1:1 all purpose GF flour.

Hi Anette,
I am so glad all three of you like them! Thank you for taking time to let me know.

Has anyone tried using powdered stevia in this? I also have honey...

I haven't use stevia in this donut recipe but I have used Lakanto monkfruit sweetener. If you normally use stevia as a 1-for-1 you could try it.

Thanks for the inspiration to make gluten free donuts! I’d never thought I could do such a thing. They were nice! The only problem was that as they rose, that rose flat, so I ended up with a flat top. Any ideas what I could have done wrong? Still delish though and simple and fun enough to try making with my 2 toddlers.
chrystal
Hi Emily,
I am so glad you liked them! A couple of things that could make them fall a bit flat on one side: if they are not cooked through all the way, if you are at a higher elevation, or if the batter was mixed a little too long. Your toddlers might like my chocolate donuts too! Happy baking.

Has anyone tried freezing them? Guessing un decorated then once defrosted them. Then decorated do they taste any different or must you make for the day then eat with 2 thing?
chrystal
Hi Emma,
We freeze donut all the time. You can freeze them with or without the glaze. When you are ready to enjoy them you can either pull them out of the freezer the night before and let them defrost, or reheat them in the microwave (the glaze melts a little).

Thanks for posting this donut recipe! We played around with our own gluten free flour blend by mixing potato and tapioca starch with rice and quinoa flour and got a lovely texture! We also applied some maple syrup with a pastry brush while they were warm instead of making a glaze and it worked out very well as well!
Being the gluten free person in the family it was exciting to find a recipe that stuck together.

I was so glad to find this recipe after figuring out that two of my kids need to eat a gluten free diet. I’ve been eating gluten free for 10 years, but since I was the only one in my family, I didn’t put a lot of effort into making very many baked goods. Today was the second time I made this recipe, and the donuts are SO good! Very easy and quick recipe. In fact, I got up only 20min early this morning to have some done before the kids went to school. The first time I made it, I used a chocolate glaze and sprinkles, which worked well. Today, I used cinnamon sugar for the topping. Yum! ☺️. I doubled the batch to freeze a dozen for another time. Thank you for such a great gluten free recipe!

Omg... just wow.
Thank you for making my boys 14th birthday.
Vanilla birthday donuts came out amazing!
1 month ago my boy & daughter diagnoses mitochondrial disorder pans/pandas. My boy diagnosis autsim when he was 4.
Nonetheless my kids are now Gluten free, casien free, soy free, corn free, all GMO and preservatives.
Weve been gluten free for few years due to my celiac disease, found out 3 years ago.
So my poor boy, couldnt enjoy the few things that he liked.....1 month ago ,due to their allergies, kids lost more than half of what theu were able eat. Because most gluten free food has soy or corn.
So i stayed up tomorrow is his birthday, goggled what i could make special for his day.....I found your receipts. So amazing, he is going to jump for joy!! I do have say, finding sprinkles so very difficult! I am not huge fan, because the supernatural sprinkles are very crunchy...but my boy,he was so happy he had his sprinkles for his pancakes and bake goods.
I did had my superfood powder into the donut mix,and on the mini donuts I added fresh crushed bananas ,glaze, sprinkles and powder sugar ontop.
Bless all of you,and esspecially the author of the receipts!!
I give 10 stars. Just,thank you!

Awe, thank you Michelle. I am so very happy you and your family love these donuts. Thank you for stopping by and sharing.

Wonderful recipe! I received donut pans for Christmas and this was the perfect recipe to try them out. I didn’t have buttermilk, but I did have eggnog! I used Robin Hood all purpose gluten free flour. I also used eggnog in the glaze and sprinkled in a little Pumpkin pie spice. So yummy! Will make again. Maybe even tomorrow. I’ll let the batter sit for a half an hour before baking. I find rice flours a bit gritty.
chrystal
I love the addition of eggnog. Thanks for stopping by and sharing!

My 2,5 year old celiac daughter and I loved those donuts!! Even my husband liked them who will survive without donuts in his life . We skipped the glaze nut I will definitely be making them very soon. One question though. Has anyone ever tried to freeze them for later?

Hi Eleni,
I'm so glad they love these donuts. Yes, we often freeze batches and pull them out and reheat them. It makes mornings super quick and it allows us to keep a treat in the freezer for birthday parties, etc.

Omg thank you so much for this recipe! I haven’t had a donut in years bc of my food allergies and these were amazing! I used rice milk and I even made them egg free by using unsweetened applesauce instead and they were still so yummy!
chrystal
Hi Gabi,
I am glad you like them. Thank you for letting me know.

How did you cook them in your air fryer? Does your donut pan fit in it?
Thanks!
Joann Pags
Just made these donuts. I made them dairy free and am very pleased with the outcome. They are tender and fluffy. I will definitely be making them again. Thank you for this recipe!
chrystal
I'm so glad you like them. Thank you for letting me know.

I don’t need to add Xantham/guar gum for the donut recipe?
chrystal
Hi Sue,
No, you don't need xathan. I use bob's 1-to-1 and it's in there, but I also use my own blend that doesn't include it. Xanthan acts as a binder in high fat recipes. You don't typically need it in donuts, muffins or quick breads. I hope that helps.
Best,
Chrystal
Debra Mettler
what did you use for dairy free
chrystal
Hi Debra,
I like to use almond milk, but flaxseed milk and coconut milk (not full fat) will work too.
Best,
Chrystal
Katie
Hi! I’ve made this recipe in the past and they were DELICIOUS! I’m attempting to make them again, but I wanted to double check on the milk. I feel like I used buttermilk the first time I made these and I noticed buttermilk is mentioned when discussing dairy free options, however the ingredient list just says “milk”. Do you use buttermilk or milk when making these. We don’t need a dairy free option ☺️. Thanks!
chrystal
Hi Katie,
I'm so glad you like them. Yes, the recipe used to say buttermilk but so many people were using thick, full fat buttermilk and their batter was too thick. I changed it to milk, but you can still use buttermilk.
Best,
Chrystal

How fun to make your own doughnuts. We did vanilla and cinnamon and they were both great. Thanks so much.
chrystal
So glad you loved them! Thanks for sharing.

Do these come out fluffy or more of a cake texture?
chrystal
These are a cake donut and have a cake-like texture.

Excited to try these! Have you tried Truvia or Swerve instead of sugar?
chrystal
I haven't but I have a few readers who have.

Brittany
I’m glad I read comments because I was confused not seeing buttermilk anymore and swear I had done dairy free buttermilk in the past! Still turns out fine with almond milk but I definitely like the “buttermilk” version better. Dough was less runny. Overall this is a solid donut recipe I’ve made 10 times at least. My son had “donut grow up” for his first birthday in November and the photos of the donuts were amazing!!!!!! This is a 10/10 recipe for simple, easy, delicious.
chrystal
Hi Brittany,
You can still use buttermilk 🙂 Sorry to confuse you. I'm glad you and your family enjoy this recipe.
Best,
Chrystal
Ellie
Thanks so much for posting this recipe. It is great. I just wanted to add that instead of using a 1/2 cup of oil you can use 1/4 cup applesauce and a 1/4 cup coconut oil. The apple sauce can replace any kind of oil and the doughnuts are moister.
chrystal
Thanks for sharing Ellie.
Best,

Can you use applesauce as an oil replacement?

I haven't personally tried but I had a few readers who did and said it worked.

Hi! I made these tonight, and while tasty I had some questions...
- I used a mini donut pan and cooked them for 7 mins, they seemed to raise a lot...would this require shorter baking time?
- How do you get yours even colored? Mine were a bit browned.
- What is your oil preference for both coating the pan and for the recipe?
Thanks!
chrystal
Hi Ally,
Thanks for stopping by again. They will seem to rise a lot because of how the mini donut pans are shaped. They have a deeper well. You can use less batter if you'd like. For the color, not all ovens are equal and it can be the way your oven cooks.
I don't coat the pan, I have a non stick pan. For the recipe I like to use canola oil or avocado oil.
I hope that helps,
Chrystal
Debra Mettler
I made these the other day my nephews loved them I used a donut baker that my Mom had for years worked great
chrystal
I'm so glad they liked them! What is a mini donut maker? Or a full size one?

Brenda
I see others have made this dairy free, what was the egg substitute?
chrystal
Yes, for dairy-free you can use any dairy-free milk. To make this egg-free, you can use a flaxseed egg. Just note that the texture will be slightly different.
Best,
Chrystal
Jordan
You can use applesauce! 1/4 cup applesauce can replace 1 egg and it will make it more moist!
Sabrina Ganschow
You can also use arrowroot!
Jennifer
My donuts didn’t really rise. I used silicone molds could that be why? Or something else?
chrystal
Hi Jennifer,
I could be the silicone pan. I haven't made donuts in one yet, but I know muffins don't rise quite as well in a silicone pan. Its because the metal pans heat up faster so they transfer the heat faster. It could also be your baking powder. Baking powder and baking soda go bad over time once they are opened.
I hope that helps.
Best,
Chrystal
Elyse Gawley
I’d like to make these but don’t have a donut pan, any ideas on what I could use instead?

Hi Elyse,
You can use a muffin pan, the just wont be in the shape of donuts.

Hi! I want to make these dairy free. I saw your note about using Bonita’s to thicken the non dairy Milk? Do we have to do this? And if so, what kind of conifer do we use?
chrystal
Hi Sarah,
I'm not sure what Bonita’s is. You can use dairy free milk, or you can add vinegar to the dairy-free milk to a make a mock buttermilk.

What egg alternative is best used for this recipe?

I made cup cakes instead of donuts as I don't have a donut baking pan. They are LITERALLY super-delicious and VERY EASY to make. I made them gluten free and dairy free. For the flour, I mixed rice, tapioca and corn starch! Thanks for sharing this!

It says to substitute non dairy milk and vinegar for the buttermilk to make it dairy free, but I don't even see buttermilk in the recipe. Did you change it?
chrystal
Hi Tami,
Thanks for the catch, yes, it used to called for buttermilk but found that regular milk worked better. You can use a dairy-free milk.

Does this work with a mini doughnut pan with 12 doughnuts on it?

Making both your vanilla doughnuts AND cupcakes at the same time (one after the other) noticed your cupcake recipe included the grams conversion which I found super helpful, could you include that for the next time I make it please? Or maybe just comment it so I can be sure I make it exactly how you’ve made it? Thanks in advance!!

Hi Meg,
I don't have metric conversions for all my recipe yet but I hope to get them all converted this year.

Do you think this will work with Bobs red mill all purpose or 1to1 flour?
chrystal
Yes, we love using the 1-to-1 (blue bag) in this recipe. I don't recommend the all purpose (brown bag) in this recipe.
Best,
Chrystal
Stephanie
I used the blue bag 1:1 flour and mine still had a dough like consistency. I managed to get it in the donut pan and make them. Super good by the way, but what can I do next time to make it more of a batter?
chrystal
Make sure to spoon the flour into the measuring cup and then level it. You can also whisk the flour before you measure it to make sure it's not packed.
Best,
Chrystal

My toddler is allergic to eggs. What would you recommend as the best substitute for them in this recipe? Typically when baking, we use plain applesauce or sometimes flaxseed. But I'm always unsure how things will bake when it's also required to be dairy and gluten free.
chrystal
You can use a flaxseed-egg in this donut recipe 🙂

Hello, I tried this recipe for tonight's super bowl! I followed the recipe but mine came out very dense and heavy! Could it be as there might be a difference in the American size large egg vs here in the UK? Thanks Kirstin

Excellent recipe and incredibly easy. Donuts came out fluffy and light, but with a slightly cake-like texture that I enjoy. Was careful not to overmix. Topped with chocolate frosting and sprinkles for my nephew's 9th birthday. Will definitely make again for myself, and put some smashed blueberries into the mix.

Hi Sheryl,
We've update it but we found that regular milk worked better. You can use a dairy-free milk.

Just made these and they came out perfect! Followed the recipe exactly, using Pamela’s all purpose GF blend. The kids and I love them ❤️
Samantha
Hello! My son was recently diagnosed with Celiac's disease so gluten free is new to me. Would you recommend using "Pamela's Products Gluten Free All Purpose Flour Blend" or the flour blend that for baking and pancakes? Thank you!
chrystal
Hi Samantha,
I love Pamela's products with that said, the mixes like the pancake mix are intended for the mixes purpose. So the pancake mix should be used to make pancakes. For recipes, you can use the flour blend. Make sure to spoon the flour into the measuring cup and then level it. Don't scoop the measuring cup into the flour otherwise you'll end up with too much flour in the recipes. Another note, not all flour blends work equally. Pamela's is great to start with though.
I hope that helps.

Where can I get the Pamela's Gluten free flour? My husband is highly allergic to corn starch and I have read that baking powder has corn starch.
Is there something else I can use?

You can make your own baking soda.
Use, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup cream of tartar, 1/4 cup arrowroot powder. Place all ingredients in a small bowl. Whisk to mix well and store in a glass jar.

I made these vanilla donuts for the first time today. Actually, it was my first time making donuts ever. They came out quite pale but the toothpick came out clean so I took them out. With gluten-free cake, I find it can be quite dry. These donuts are moist and delicious! I will definitely be making more of these!
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Lu,
Glad you liked the GF vanilla cake donuts!

I added some cocoa and crushed gluten free sandwich cookies in the batter...then crushed cookies on top of the glaze...for cookies and cream doughnuts...my daughters favorite

Michelle
Can you substitute the granulated sugar for honey or any other natural sugar
Lindsay
We haven't tried this with honey or any other liquid sweetener, but I think that coconut sugar would work. The texture might be a bit more dense than if you used processed granulated sugar.
Kelly
You can’t fry cake donuts, the dough for fried donuts is more similar to a biscuit/bread dough.
Tina
I've not tried it with this recipe yet, but have used other baked donuts recipes for making fried donut holes with great success. You certainly cannot get the batter to hold a donut shape in the fryer, and if too big the outside will burn before the inside is cooked through with this type of batter, but if you have a cookie scoop and use that to drop small balls in the oil you will get some great donut holes. I tend to make those for very special occasions, Christmas morning or birthday donut bars, stuff like that. 🙂
Kim Collins
I make this recipe alot.. best additions I have found are adding frozen blueberries or raspberries to the donuts after you put the batter in the pan but before baking.. Also another favorite addition is chocolate chips or M & M's... big hit for us.
Tina Coyle
These look so good! Our favorite gluten free flour mix has xanthan gum. Do you recommend a mix with or without it?
chrystal
IF the mix is rice flour, potato starch and tapioca, you can use it if it has xanthan.
Best,
Chrystal
Heather
These are terrific. The batter is thin like cake batter which is my favorite because the outside gets golden with a slight crispy crust giving the donut great texture. Nice vanilla aroma & flavor. Make a cherry glaze using cherry instant jello I found on the web so pretty & fun!
Christine
Thank You for this recipe my daughter really enjoyed these. We have only just found out she is gluten intolerant and she was really missing donuts, the one item no one seems to do GF. I’m in Australia so a few simple conversations and GF donuts and a happy little girl. Thank you for taking the time to share your recipes, it makes a difference for families like mine. God bless
JoDee
Big Request!!!
My so has Celiac disease and to make things worse, he also has a rice allergy! I have such a time finding a flour base to work with! He is also allergic to almonds!! Have you had any success with a flour base lacking these ingredients? I’m desperate!
chrystal
Hi JoDee,
I don't have a lot of experience with this blend, but try mixing this flour blend and see if it works in your recipes.
1 cup (290g.) Gluten Free Oat Flour (if he can do oats, some with celiac tolerate oats)
1 cup (120g.) millet flour
1 cup (115g.) tapioca flour
1 cup (120g.) potato starch
4 teaspoons xanthan gum
If he can't do oat flour, you could try cassava flour in this blend recipe, in place of the oat flour. Make sure all flours and starches are labeled gluten free (check labels).

Chrystal

We also have several family members with Celiacs & nut allergies. We've had luck with chickpea, coconut & pumpkin seed flour. Not all are widely available yet, so we do mill our own. But, only our son purchased the mill & we share the bulk products. It's been a good excuse for a family meal as well! All 5 families affected.
Good luck to you!
Caitlyn
Has anyone used this recipe in a donut maker(nostalgia or baby cakes)? My daughter just got a maker for her birthday, we’re trying to find the perfect gf & df recipe.
Nene
Hi if I use the mini donuts pan does the baking time change?
Lindsay
Yes, you will want to reduce the baking time. Keep a close eye on them the first time you make them to see exactly how long they'll need to bake. All donut pans will be a little bit different. Let us know how you did!
Jenn
Can you substitute the granulated sugar for coconut sugar or any other sugar sub?
Lindsay
We haven't tried that substitution, but I think that coconut sugar would work. The texture might be a bit more dense than if you used processed granulated sugar.
Stacey
I made these donuts on Friday night and they were all gone by Saturday night! They are amazing. I have been gluten free for 12 years and they are by far the best gf donuts I have found. They taste like a cross between a fried and baked donut, amazing texture and stay super moist. I tried making a lemon glazed, a vanilla glazed, and just powdered sugar and all three were fantastic. I served them to three people who eat gluten and all asked for second donuts! I can't recommend these enough - I have already sent the recipe to my other Celiac friends. I wish I could post my photos here so everyone can see how beautifully these turn out. My husband has already requested a second batch. Thank you so much for the recipe!
Lindsay
Hi Stacey!
Thank you so much for coming back to let us know how much you liked the donuts recipe, and for sharing it with your friends! While there isn't really a way for you to leave a photo here, we would love it if you'd share your photos on social media and tag us! @glutenfreepalate on Facebook or Instagram. Do you plan to come back and add weights to your flour amounts? I typically weigh all my baking ingredients in grams. I use gfJules flour. She recommends 135g=1cup with her flour but it could vary depending on your flour mix and style of scooping. I would really appreciate that detail!
Lindsay
Thank you for the suggestion! You are right, the weights can vary based on the brand and type of flour used.

I just tried this recipe and baked them in my muffin Pan. So I Added 2:00minutes baking time and they turned out good, slightly underbaked how I like them. Loving how the frosting is the sweet change up I used to change flavors. V rom vanilla to cinnamon to chocolate. YUM!
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Amy,
Great idea using a muffin pan. Glad you loved them!
Amanda
What oil does everyone recommend best for this recipe?
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Amanda, I used vegetable oil. But you can use any you usually use.
Maggie
Do you know how I can adjust this to make chocolate donuts? My daughter is Celiac and misses chocolate donuts. Thank you in advance!
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Maggie, try this recipe https://www.glutenfreepalate.com/gluten-free-baked-chocolate-glazed-donuts/.

hi, I have a little problem I did follow all recipe but I mixed the wet mixture into the dry mixture it causes into very thick I want to make it thin how I fix that
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Andrew,
Add some milk or water until it reaches your desired consistency. Hope that helps.
Shannon
I made these and used Bob's Red Mill Gluten free All Purpose Flour. I am not sure if maybe it was the flour I used but my cake/donut part doesn't taste that great and I followed the recipe. Tastes very bland to me. Any thoughts on why this happened or is this normal?
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Shannon,
This is tricky to troubleshoot. How did you measure your flour? Where all ingredients within date?
Mark
Did anyone add xanthan gum to the flour mix? Thank you.
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Mark,
If your flour blend does not have it, you can add it in.
Lulu
Thanks for this recipe.
I Tried these in an air fryer and it works. 10-12 mins
The only draw back is one can only bake 4-5 donuts at a time.
Wendy Stoltz
Pleasure, Lulu. Thanks for sharing.
Meg
Hi! We’re looking forward to trying this recipe over the weekend! Do you freeze the donuts after icing and with the sprinkles, or do you freeze them plain and finish (top) them after thawing?
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Meg,
It is generally recommended to freeze gluten-free donuts plain, without any icing or sprinkles, and then add the toppings after thawing. This is because the moisture from the icing and sprinkles can make the donuts soggy when they are frozen and then thawed.
Diane Romano
Which of your gf flour blends did you use for the donuts? Blend 1 or blend 2? I like the potato flour in the mixtures, should make a very tender product.
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Diane,
The first flour blend is a little lighter and it works great it all of my recipes for quick breads, cakes, donuts, and cookies. The second gluten free flour blend option has a bit more structure and it works well with rolls, bread, cinnamon rolls, and cookies.
So to answer your question the 1st one.
Eileen
My son is allergic to corn, too, so cannot have xanthan gum. I have your flour blend 1 mixed up without the xanthan gum. Will this cake donut recipe work without the xanthan gum? Thanks.
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Eileen,
You would need to add an alternative to xanthan gum. Guar gum is a common substitute for xanthan gum in gluten-free baking. It serves a similar purpose and can help improve the texture and structure of your donuts. I have not tested this so try it and see if it works.
Denise
Thank You for this recipe. I can't have gluten because of allegeries. These were the best recipe yet. Even my husband who is not gluten free, loved them. I used almond milk and they turned out delicious. Did not use the glaze because I like my donuts plain. Great recipe. Definitely a keeper.
Zoe
So happy to hear that, Denise!
Wendy Stoltz
Thanks Denise, appreciate the feedback.
Danielle
A full teaspoon of salt seems like a lot! Is that really correct or a possible error? I am excited to make these with Better Batter flour and will update on how that flour works.
Wendy Stoltz
Hi Danielle,
It is correctt it balances the sweetness and enhance the flavors.
It's great to hear you'll be using Better Batter flour—I look forward to hearing how your donuts turn out with that substitution! Happy baking!
Dani
Can I make these in a mini donut maker? Will that work?
Jim Markus
A mini donut maker should make these turn out just fine, but I've never tried it. Please let me know how it turns out!
Sarah
I just wanted to say these are the easiest, most wonderful donuts I have ever made. I am allergic to potato starch so finding an AP GF flour that doesn’t contain potato starch is hard AND then subbing in a recipe and it working is the other challenge. However, I can say I successfully subbed Namaste flour for the AP GF flour in the recipe! My family says these are hands down THE BEST DONUTS I’ve ever made, gluten and gluten free! So thank you!
Jim
That's so great to hear! Thanks!
Lissa
Looking to make these in a donut maker. Is that possible with this recipe?
Jim
We haven't done these in a donut maker, but it should work. Please let us know how they turn out!
Gabi
Can this recipe be halved? Thanks!
Jim
Yes, that should work just fine!
Lisa
I’ve just recently started eating gluten free and I’ve made these donuts and they are such a treat! Even my family who aren’t gluten free love them! Thank you for such a wonderful recipe and I look forward to trying more of your recipes!
Frances
Hi! Can you used melted butter instead of oil?
Jim
That should be fine, but it's not something I've tried in the past. Please let me know how they turn out if you do!
Sobeyda
Absolute favorite GF donut recipe! I made it with oatmilk, added cinnamon and pumpkin spice, and instead of the glaze, I brushed them with melted DF butter and coated them with a cinnamon sugar mixture. I also tried one with powdered sugar! wow! So fluffy, moist, and delicious! I'm obsessed! Thank you!
Paula
Best GF donuts ever!
