Gluten-Free Rice Krispies Recipe
I wanted to make an easy recipe, one that didn't take too long or require too many ingredients, because this is such a nostalgic treat. And the main reason I needed to make it myself? I had one (very common) question.
Are Rice Krispies gluten-free?
Traditional Rice Krispies cereal is not considered gluten-free because it contains a malt flavoring from barley, a gluten-containing grain. The good news is that gluten-free versions of puffed rice cereal are available from other brands, so you can still make and enjoy this delicious treat.
My children and I love making these gluten-free rice crispy treats. They can even make them themselves as they are so easy to make. All you need is 4 ingredients and a bit of time, and you can have these ready for lunchboxes, party treats, or snacks on the go.
You can change them by adding your favorite things like chocolate chips, candy pieces, or more. You can even use food coloring, sprinkles and holiday candy and change them up for Halloween, Christmas, or any other holiday. We love creating these; children love them, and they are so simple to make.
Why You’re Going to Love These Gluten-Free Rice Krispies Treats
Easy to make – This classic recipe is simple to make gluten-free, using gluten-free ingredients at most grocery stores.
Simple Ingredients – With only four ingredients, this recipe quickly pulls together.
Feeds a crowd – This recipe makes a 9 x 13 pan of gluten-free rice krispies treats. There’s plenty to share.
Ingredients in Gluten-Free Rice Krispies Treats
As promised, you'll only need these four ingredients to make the recipe.
Butter: You can use regular dairy butter or a dairy-free butter if you need dairy-free gluten-free rice krispie treats. Either will work (seriously, this is a very forgiving recipe).
Marshmallows: Most brands of marshmallows are gluten-free, but please check all labels before purchasing. I like to use the little marshmallows. They melt quickly, and they get that wonderful sticky texture you'll need to form the treats.
Gluten-Free Crispy Rice Cereal: While Kellogg’s Rice Krispies used to be gluten-free, they now have malt barley flavoring, which is not gluten-free. But don’t worry; you can use many gluten-free rice puffs. I have a few options listed below if you need ideas!
Vanilla Extract: Make sure to use pure vanilla extract. When it's pure, it's gluten free. Those with Celiac will want to make sure to use an extract that's made without any chance of cross contact.
The Equipment You'll Need
We've already talked about how few ingredients you'll need to make the perfect gluten-free riece krispies. So what about equipment? It turns out, you should already have most of this in your kitchen. Here's what I used:
- A Large Pot - For melting the butter and marshmallows together.
- Spatula or Wooden Spoon - A non-stick spatula or wooden spoon is great for stirring the marshmallow mixture.
- Baking Pan - A 9x13-inch pan works best for pressing the mixture into shape.
- Parchment Paper or Wax Paper - Helpful for lining the baking pan for easy removal and cleanup.

Tips for Making the Best Gluten-Free Rice Krispies
Choose the Right Cereal - Select a gluten-free puffed rice cereal that's known for its quality to ensure your treats are both safe and delicious.
Use Fresh Marshmallows - Fresh marshmallows melt more smoothly, leading to a better texture in your final treats.
Low and Slow Melting - Melt your marshmallows on low heat to avoid burning and ensure an even, smooth mixture.
Grease For Easy Clean Up - Lightly greasing your spatula and the pan can prevent sticking, making the process cleaner and easier.
Press Gently - When pressing the mixture into the pan, do it gently to keep your treats light and airy. You do not want them compacted too much.
