Gluten-Free Cherry Cobbler
I've been baking gluten free cherry cobbler for years! It was one of the first recipes I made gluten-free. I love all gluten free cherry desserts.
Something that most people don't know about me is that I started my baking career, interest, love - or whatever you want to call it, with cherries.
When I was twelve years old we lived in a small farm house and right out the front door was an old tart cherry tree.
One summer day, when I was sitting around bored with nothing super interesting to do, I climbed the cherry tree and picked a bucket full of cherries.
I then searched through the storage boxes until I found an original addition of the better homes and garden cookbook. I thumbed through in until I found the cherry pie recipe. It looked easy enough.
I spent the rest of the day carefully reading the instructions and crafting what would be the beginning of the rest of my life - a fabulous cherry pie.
Gluten Free Cherry Cobbler Recipe
My family loved the pie and I was so excited to make something from scratch that they could enjoy. I felt like I had brought happiness into our house when we were in a period of little happiness. Long story short, we had a couple of rough years, being homeless for some time, my parents looking for jobs, etc.
I continued to pick the cherries and make pies until the tree ran out. It was a large tree and I probably made more than ten pies with the cherries from the tree. Now I make everything from cherry pie to this gluten free cherry cobbler recipe.

How to make Gluten Free Cherry Crisp
If you're more of a crisp person and you'd like to convert this recipe into a gluten free cherry crisp, simply make the filling the same way (using the recipe below) and top the cherry filling with the crisp from my Gluten Free Blackberry Crisp Recipe.
For the cherry crisp topping:
- 1 cup gluten-free oats
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
- ¼ cup all purpose gluten-free flour blend
- ½ cup butter, cold (or dairy-free butter)
- ½ cup chopped almonds
For the crisp topping - In a medium mixing bowl combine oats, brown sugar, and flour. Cut in butter until mixture resembles course crumbs. Stir in nuts. sprinkle crisp topping over the cherry filling. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the fruit is tender and the topping is light brown.
A friend of ours has a cherry tree in her yard. When I saw it, it brought back memories of the pies I baked that summer. She kindly picked about five cups worth and brought them over to me the other day. I was feeling a bit under the weather and wanted to make something quick, so I opted for a gluten-free cherry cobbler.
This Gluten-Free Cherry Cobbler is so delicious and comforting. The tart cherries are perfect with the sugar and cobbler topping. There is something about a homemade gluten-free cherry cobbler, made with fresh picked tart cherries that brings all the good memories flooding in.

This looks amaaazing! Cobblers are something I've only recently discovered (well, I say recently but I mean maybe 5 or so years since I first went to Louisiana and spent time with Jesse's family) and I loveeeee them! I need to make a cherry one as that's one flavour I've never had before!

Good recipe but it's confusing and incomplete. I'm making the cherry crisp with canned cherries but you only give instructions for fresh cherries. And you don't list specifically the oven temp for the crisp. I'm assuming it's the same as listed for the other recipes. Thanks though for your ideas.
chrystal
Hi Gene,
I typically make this with fresh cherries, which is why I use fresh cherries in the recipe/instructions. You can use canned cherries and bake for the time listed. For the cobbler topping, the temperature is in the first step in the instructions.
Best,
Chrystal

Dear Chrystal,
Thank you for all the great recipes. Could the cherry cobbler/crisp be made with frozen cherries? What kinds of modifications need to be made with the recipes?
JoAnn

Hi JoAnne,
You are very welcome. I am so glad you are enjoying my recipes. For the cherry desserts, you can use frozen cherries. As long as they are pitted, you can defrost them and use them as if they were fresh cherries. Just note that they may be a little softer after cooking, from the freezing and defrosting process.
Best,
Chrystal
