If you are following a gluten- and dairy-free diet, you need these tasty dairy-free appetizers. They're perfect for all your entertaining and ensure that you cover most allergens in your spread. So you can have a great New Year spread, a general get-together, or a birthday with dietary needs covered.
Dairy-Free Appetizer Recipes
I've collated a few of our favorites, so select from the ones below and create your list of dairy-free appetizer recipes.
Gluten-Free Sushi
This Gluten-free sushi recipe with toasted tofu is perfect as a nice handheld appetizer. You can make different fillings so you have a nice variety for guests to choose from.
Sausage And Shrimp Appetizer
This sausage and shrimp appetizer is always such a showstopping no cheese appetizer. It has such a beautiful presentation and works so well with the easy-to-eat skewers.
Gluten-Free Corn Fritters
These gluten-free corn fritters are such a hit. Omit the sour cream or add in a dairy free sour cream.
Gluten-Free Zucchini Fritters
I love gluten-free zucchini fritters, especially when our garden has provided more than what we can eat. Omit the sour cream or use a dairy-free version. And what's better than fresh zucchini used in a homemade recipe?
Gluten-Free Latkes
Gluten-Free Latkes are amazing with a dipping sauce. We love potato anything. They're comfort food!
Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets
Gluten-free chicken nuggets are always a favorite as an appetizer. Don't forget the ketchup. Make sure to check that the ketchup you use does not have dairy in it.
Gluten-Free Chicken Wings
These gluten-free chicken wings have the best seasoning. Everyone loves wings. Don't forget the napkins for those sticky fingers and a bowl on the side for the bones.
Guacamole
This Guacamole (avocado dip) is super easy and dairy free, so all you need is 5 minutes and it's done. Dips work so well if you are feeding a large group of people, as the dippers are cost-effective. I also like to add a bowl of olives to extend the offering.
Hummus
Gluten-Free Hummus is always a great dip to have on hand. It is simple to make, too, and you can make it ahead and store it in the fridge. Serve it with a mixture of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes or peppers. Make sure the tortilla chips you serve with are dairy-free and gluten-free. Most plain ones are; it is the flavored varieties you need to look out for.
Falafel
Gluten-Free Falafel is a tasty addition to your spread. And so many people love them. Made from chickpeas, fresh herbs, and warm spices, these crispy bites are naturally gluten-free and dairy-free.
Gluten-Free Crackers
And last but not least are these gluten-free crackers. Crackers work for so many purposes. They are the perfect addition to this gluten-free charcuterie board, but you'll need to use dairy-free cheeses or add the crackers next to all the dips. They are tasty plain or with the addition of a nice dip.
Why Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Appetizers?
Lactose intolerance is when the body is unable to properly digest lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products. This happens due to a deficiency of lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose.
Did you know that the symptoms of celiac disease and lactose intolerance can sometimes be confused? People with untreated celiac disease often develop temporary lactose intolerance because gluten damage to the small intestine affects the body’s ability to digest lactose. In some cases, healing the gut by following a strict gluten-free diet can restore the ability to digest lactose. However, not everyone fully regains lactose tolerance, and some may need to remain dairy-free long-term. Always consult your doctor to assist you through this process.
Common Dairy-Free Swaps
Here is a list of common dairy swaps you can make if you want to take a family favorite recipe and convert it. I've worked out my favorite brands, and so can you.
- Cheese - Dairy-free cheeses like cashew cheese, almond cheese, or coconut-based mozzarella.
- Cream Cheese - Dairy-free cream cheese made from coconut, cashew, or almond bases.
- Yogurt for Dips - Coconut yogurt, almond yogurt, or soy-based yogurt.
- Butter - Plant-based butter or oils like olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil.
- Sour Cream - Dairy-free sour cream or thick coconut yogurt.
- Milk - Use oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk. Use a neutral flavor depending on the recipe.
Now let's move on to some mouthwatering recipes for you to make.
Hosting Tips for Serving Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Guests
As with any intolerance or allergen, or dietary requirement, here are some things I like to do when hosting.
- Cross-contamination is a concern for gluten-free and dairy-free guests, so make sure everyone involved in the prep is aware of the requirements.
- Food labelling is so important, especially when you have a selection of appetizers. I also like to include an ingredient list where possible. It makes for an easier evening where you are not called upon multiple times to confirm things.
- Variety is the spice of life, so try and incorporate dips, savory options, snacks, fresh fruit, fresh herbs, and veggies so you cover all your guests.
- Ask your guests ahead of time what their dietary requirements are, as it helps you to understand how to cater.
- I also like to keep the packaging on the counter in my kitchen, so if anyone is particularly sensitive, they can take a look at the ingredient label for themselves. This is for crackers or any other packaged products.
Enjoy Your Appetizers
Now that you have a go-to list of dairy-free party food for your lactose intolerance, you can go and host a party for guests with a lot of tasty options. Or if you're that friend who caters so caringly for all your guests, I hope this helps you plan your spread.
